Understanding Hemorrhoids & Colorectal Health

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus, and they can cause discomfort, pain, and even bleeding. While common, they should not be ignored, as severe cases may require surgical intervention.

Internal Hemorrhoids

Located inside the rectum, are often painless but may cause bleeding.

External Hemorrhoids

Form around the anus, causing swelling, itching, and pain.

Thrombosed Hemorrhoids

Blood clots within haemorrhoids, leading to severe pain and swelling.

If left untreated, haemorrhoids can worsen over time, leading to complications that require more intensive treatment.

Could It Be More Than Haemorrhoids? – Why Colon Screening Matters

Haemorrhoids can feel similar to other colorectal conditions, including colorectal polyps or even colon cancer.

In its early stages, colon cancer may have no symptoms at all. And when symptoms do appear, they are often mild, leading many to dismiss them as just a stomach issue or something that will pass.

Why Early Screening Is So Important?

Early screening can identify potential concerns before they develop into more serious issues. This is particularly crucial if you are at higher risk due to factors such as age of family history as it allows for prompt intervention and more treatment options.

4 Signs Its Time to Consider a Colorectal Screening

Are over the age of 45

Have a family history of colon cancer or colorectal polyps

Have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative colitis)

Have experienced persistent symptoms like rectal bleeding, bloating, or irregular bowel movements.
